Rue Mornay ApartmentThe picture below is a view of the exterior of the building, and the apartment is on the top floor, left of center, with two small terraces facing in different directions, with one looking toward Canal St. Martin, and the other toward Sacre Coeur and the Pompidou Center.
This map depicts the neighborhood, with Rue Mornay at the center.
View From One Terrace - Canal St. MartinThe pictures below are a view from one of the apartment's two terraces, looking toward Canal St. Martin, which is only a few steps from the entrance to the apartment. At the end of the street, there is a bridge to the other side of the canal, and a very nice walkway, and children's playground. The other picture was taken from the near bank looking "up" the canal toward Place de La Bastille, which is not visible in this picture, but is only a short walk from where the picture was taken. Incidentally, canal boat rides are available at the focal point of the picture.
View From Second Terrace - Sacre CoeurThe view from the larger of the apartment's two terraces is over typical Parisian rooftops. In the distance is the lovely Sacre Coeur. And, slightly to the left but not visible in this photograph, is the Pompidou Center. In any case, a pretty view, and either terrace is a very pleasant place to relax after a long day, or to enjoy coffee and a baguette in the morning.
Table on Second TerraceThe larger of the apartment's two terraces has a table that can be set up that will accomodate four. In pleasant weather it is a very nice spot for breakfast if you are eating in, or for other meals later in the day. Obviously, it also works well for snacks or a glass of wine, with the nice views of Sacre Coeur.
Apartment InteriorDepending upon the number of guests, there are choices for sleeping arrangements. The picture below shows the fold down murphy bed, easily accessible by moving the dining table out of the way. Please note that the larger of the two terraces, the one with a view of Sacre Coeur, is on the right of the murphy bed.
The dining table is pictured round, but there are leaves that can be added to provide more eating space, or "work area", and still provide sufficient eating space.
Living RoomThe living room has been completely redone, and has a sitting area to the right as you enter the room. The red sofa is a convertible, and there are two armchairs. Since this picture was taken, the TV has been put on a rolling cart, a picture of which is below, along with the new drop leaf desk. The cable connection has, I believe, five English speaking channels.
Living Room Desk - WIFI ConnectionThe drop leaf desk can support a laptop, and I have often placed a small portable printer on top of the desk, or the phone handset. The WIFI router is on the bottom of the TV stand, so signal strength is excellent.
The picture below faces the wall from which the murphy bed folds down. However, the armchairs would normally be placed closer together than they are for this picture, which would maximize space utilization, and make it easy to move the dining table if the murphy bed was used.
Living Room - ContinuedThe picture below shows the door to the sleeping alcove, which has a trundle bed that converts to two twin beds, or can be used as a single bed. This arrangement simply adds a lot of flexibility to the sleeping arrangements.
The picture below shows the trundle bed in the sleeping alcove, and clearly shows that the sloping ceiling does not cause a problem at all for sleeping. In effect, though this room is referred to as an alcove (because of the sloping ceiling), it could legitimately be called a small bedroom for two. By pulling out the bottom of the trundle bed, in effect there are two twin sized beds, and the furniture arrangement in the living room can be left undisturbed.
The picture below faces the wall from which the murphy bed folds down, and shows the dinning table as well. The entrance hall is on the left, and if you look closely through the white curtains, you can see the outlines of the terrace which faces Sacre Coeur.
Full Sized Kitchen And BathroomThe kitchen has just been completely redone. As you can see the kitchen is full sized, and not a kitchenette. There is a good sized refrigerator/freezer to the left, an oven, and a small combination clothes washer/dryer under the window. The usual appliances are there as well, including a microwave on the counter to the right, coffee maker, etc...
Likewise the bathroom is a full sized bathroom, with a tub, as you can see, and a hand held shower unit. Unlike some European baths, there is even a shower curtain.
Floor PlanThe floor plan for the apartment is below, and hopefully it is quite clear. But to make sure you are oriented correctly, the door to the apartment is at the bottom of the plan, and immediately after entering the kitchen is on your right and the full bathroom on your left. There is a hall closet before entering the living room, and there is a smaller closet to the right in the living room. The smaller of the two terraces is on the right, and in the upper right corner is the alcove that will be finished off as a small bedroom. The murphy bed would fold down from the built in bookcase enclosure at the left of the living room, and the larger terrace is in the upper left. Because the doors to the terraces are much larger than a normal window, and because the apartment is located on the top floor, the living room is very light and airy - although there are screens should you want to block the light. All in all, a good floor plan with no wasted space.
Additional InformationTruly a very nice apartment, in a quiet neighborhood, yet close to the metro, and the lovely walkways along the Canal St. Martin and the quays of the Seine. And only a short walk into the heart of the historic Marais, Place Des Voges, or the Gare de Lyon for day trips outside of Paris. Overall, well located, quiet, comfortable, and pretty views at a very reasonable price of $1,000.00 per week during high season (essentially when the terraces can normally be used for eating or seating), or $850.00 per week at other times of the year.
